Brad shares: Most people have no idea why they have trouble retaining information when they are having a conversation with someone, sitting in a classroom, or attending a seminar. The reason is that everyone has what is called, a “Reticular Activating System”. It is like a switch in the brain that controls your ability to be able to retain what you hear. When you are day-dreaming or talking to yourself, the switch is closed, and even though you hear the sounds, it keeps you from remembering what you are hearing.

Staying present in your conversations and keeping your “self talk” or “telling tension” to a minimum, allows you to retain what you hear. This is critical to being a good communicator at home or at work. I believe that with awareness comes change, and if you are aware of the Reticular Activating System, you can become a better communicator.
